Let gravity work for you. According to Yoga Journal, inversions are good for your lungs, heart, thyroid and more. The Sirsasana (headstand) can revitalize the entire body and stimulate the mind. Mr. Iyenger himself -of Iyenger yoga fame- considers Sarvangasana, or shoulderstand, “one of the greatest boons conferred on humanity by our ancient sages … it is the ‘mother of asana.’”
Gain confidence in your strength. Practicing inversion poses can improve balance and body awareness as well as circulation, relieve stress, reduce pain and shrinking in the spine, strengthen ligaments and the core.
Learn from a pro. Full arm balance, forearm balance, head balance, shoulder balance … Instructor Carmen Viola teaches the fundamental actions needed to practice inversion poses, including preparations, modifications and variations. Certified in Iyengar Yoga, Carmen began her yoga practice in 1976 and has been teaching yoga for 25 years. For this workshop, “You must be generally strong and flexible,” she says. “Bring an empty stomach, and extra yoga blankets if you have them.” Each student will need three blankets each; those with neck or shoulder injuries should sit this one out.
